Some music I'm writing for an RPG

'allo there, here's some orchestral music I'm doing for a single player RPG... if anyone wants to listen to it and tell me what they think, I'd be much obliged! Music Note, the "overworld" song isn't really for the overworld after all. The names are just educated guesses at this point... they might be used for different purposes in the end. In case anyone wonders about the techy stuff, I used Garritan Personal Orchestra and the Lexicon Pantheon LE reverb, and sequenced it all in Sonar 3.

Hi Argebargle. The quality of the sounds at your disposal is darn good! :) Your ideas for orchestration are valid and stand well. The only thing that I am not hearing is subtlety. To me, it sounds as if many of the instruments are FORCED and are maybe a bit too intense. It sounds as if every instrument is FORTE. I know GPO cannot be fully realized until the mod wheel for expression is mastered so I think this would be a good place to think about focusing your efforts next.

That being said, your ideas are solid and the music would fit well into a single player RPG. Good luck. :)

Thanks for the response, and yeah, I'd tend to agree with you about there needing more dynamics. Indeed, Garritan instruments can tend to sound a bit forced if one is lax about proper velocity programming. These songs are probably just the tip of the finished soundtrack... I have every intention of writing more subtle score.

Also, my keyboard doesn't have a mod wheel! This means that I have to program dynamic swells by hand, which is quite annoying.

Sure Arglebargle! (Cool name btw)

EESSHh...No mod wheel? lol Well that is understandable. Is there some way you can bypass having to mess with the mod wheel by way of your sequencer? Surely there is a way you can add swells and articulations swiftly and accurately using the edit function.

Nope!

Sorry, but there's pretty much no easy way for me to add velocity swells... it's one of those steps of my songwriting flow that I dread, hahaha.

If I wasn't so abysmally poor, I'd pick up a MIDI controller with a mod wheel, but, y'know... I'm poor. :D

What? You're a musician and you're poor? No way!!! ;)

Incidentally I am in the same place as you with GPO. I have a mod wheel, but I haven't figured out how to utilize it yet.
I will try to figure that out and let you know how that goes. I wish they made articulations a little bit easier to learn and execute, geshhh....

Hey argle, about how much does a mod wheel usually run?
a mod wheel usually comes standard on a keyboard--it's a small feature. As far as I know, you can't get a stand-alone mod wheel because most higher-level synths or controllers have them these days. I know you can program a MIDI device to accept other signals as a mod wheel signal, but I can't remember how off the top of my head...

Like Blaise said, mod wheels come on keyboards or MIDI controller... a decent cheap controller will cause around $150.

It's just my luck that my particular keyboard is, like, the only one in the world without a mod wheel. :D

Well no, that's an overstatement.
I heard the overworld one, it's good! Could use a bit of mastering overall, seems lacking on the higher frequencies, but maybe that's just my cheesy computer at work.
