How would you update Donkey Kong (you know the game where Mario climbs girders and jumps over barrels) to integrate more interesting gameplay, but not by adding enemies that can be jumped on?
My take on this would be to do the same thing that Nintendo took with Super Mario 64 - make it 3D! That would be the most dramatic update to it. Other than that, it's just adding a few things here and there to make more interesting gameplay. Think back to the Frogger update and how they made it 3D - they kept the basic gameplay of moving only 4 directions, but added a few things here and there. Then Robotron 64 and Centipede, same thing.

The move to 3d isn't necessarily always better. I think a 3d Frogger only adds a degree of frustration, I think some games are just meant for 2d.

I suppose that's just a matter of opinion but meh...

Has nobody ever heard of the game Donkey Kong 64 or something?

Nope [headshake][lol] Ahhh, there it is.
It's not the same thing. You guys are thinking of Donkey Kong Country... Donkey Kong 64 was and update to the SNES title.

He's talking about the FIRST EVER released game on the NES where the gameplay is considerably different then the SNES and 64 games.

It's not "the same game." You play as Kong (and the other simians?) rather than as Mario, for starters. It's more of a spiritual successor to Donkey Kong Country.

[edit: beaten to it.]

The original question, therefore, stands, as does the suggestion to make it 3D. Rather than having Kong standing on a horizontal platform affording one degree of freedom, have him on a circular dias with ladders at various points around it - some of them broken - as well as traps on the platform. Also let Kong booby-trap some of the barrels he throws down, so jumping over them isn't always the best option!

Just remember, Donkey Kong was a distraction, a toy, not a "game" as we think of them today. Don't try to work too many hours of gameplay into it.
They call me "Quick Fingered Seb" for a reason ;-P

Yes, it was a few minutes of quick fun. Sounds perfect for a flash mini-game.
Keep the gameplay the same. Maybe update the graphics. I think what would help it the most would just be more levels. You can make it through all 3 levels in like 5 minutes. Also release an easy to use level editor.
