I'm currently writing a game from scratch using openGL. It's along the same lines as Tyrian, or Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I'm trying to get some feedback on what I've done so far, questions and comments are more than welcome. You can download the Terax alpha 1.0 here: http://www.deepdream.org/~teov/Terax.zip ...and here's a screenshot if you'd just like to take a look. http://img196.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rockemp2ad.jpg

A lot of things are/have been redone since that alpha. The terrain tiles are being reworked, an energy system for your weapons (along with generators that can be purchased) has been added, and there's a new boss that isn't in there yet.

wow thats pretty amazing.
a main menu at the start and more sounds for the weapons and that would be great. though when i fullscreen it the play area stays the same
Thanks for your input! I'm not a big sound person, but I know a few people who are, and they're going to help me flesh out the sound bank. As for the fullscreen comment, I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

If you find any bugs (that aren't in the readme), please let me know here, I'm constantly trying to make the game better. The final version will have about 6 maps, more weapons to buy, upgrades like generators, shields, engines, and special weapons.

Oh, and for the people graciously testing it out here, there are some dev cheat keys to help you along: F12: skips the current level. F11: lots of money.

I've got a new build coming up. I realized what that issue with the fullscreen was, and hadn't noticed it because I'm using F1 to activate fullscreen. I'll fix it.

There's also been some other changes, like a lot of the terrain tile artwork, and the energy system and upgrades for it. More info soon.

Need to contact the people hosting the current file, and get it updated. If anyone would like to test it out sooner, I can be contacted at "clossfms(at)hotmail.com". Also as "script252" on AIM. Any feedback would be more than welcome.

Hey that's pretty fun! Not sure why but I'm unable to move up and left at the same time while shooting.

Definitely had a Tyrian/Raptoresque feel to it, good show!

Thanks man. The input is actually the standard windows crap, and I've experienced the same problems with it on my keyboard... but I've tested it on other machines that had no input problems at all. I may try out directx's input, and see if that eleminates the problem.

Nice graphics, it works well.
Thank you. I've still got some polishing to do, but the first episode is getting pretty close to finished right now.

First up, it's got a pretty damn amazing name, minus an R, even if I do say so myself :)

Minor gripes...
When I alt+tab to desktop, the resolution isn't reset to default resolution.
(Made trying to find the cheats hard to read :) )

Maybe because I'm getting old lol (27).. the "scale" of the whole thing is a little hectic for me, make the scale slightly smaller maybe, that'd enable more units on screen at same time, without "overload".
Argh, it's hard to explain what I mean above, the reasoning for it.. But although I enjoyed vertical shooters alot, I preferred horizontal ones such as Silkworm more.. I guess the "more time" comes into play, bah just ignore me, maybe it's just my poor reaction times or summin :)
I think more room = more units on screen, less cluttered, more action.
/endGripes

I had no problem with fullscreen mode, although I hit F1 to change from windowed mode.

I can move up/left and fire all at same time, no problem here.

The graphics rule,upgrades/money rule (Made me feel like buying a 486 to play Raptor again!)

Add homing missiles and auto targetting minigun like Raptor had.. I loved the weak, but no hassle auto aiming gun in Raptor!
Add armour and shields... shields slowly recharge if you're not firing. If hit while shields are not depleted, add a spherical glow around ship when hit.

Probably hard to add, but an AI wingman would rule!

Beam lasers would be cool too (High damage, straight line only, slow fire rate)

Add purchasing of better armour, shields, engines(Movement speed) add inertia... and add purchasing of inertia dampeners which reduce this "annoying to control" effect.

Much better than anything I've ever done.. keep it up!
I wish you luck in finishing/polishing it..
Dave.
