1)How large your game was, if your towns were located reasonably far apart then you should think about doing this. But if your towns are going to be a few minutes apart, there is no need to...based on a "town currency" that is. If players are constantly having to switch their currency, they will just get annoyed (there's nothing scarier then a bunch of MMO nerds on a rampage o_0)
2)It would also have alot to do with how politically based the world is. I could see how having many different currencies due to different governmental rules, and the basis of which every government wants to better the others, that this could add to the effect of the realistic view of the world. So depending on whether the world is going to be a pure PVP MMO, or if it's going to be a more traditional MMO based on realistic views.
Quote: Yet from a pragmatic point of view, it's just more room for catastrophe, it's already hard enough to balance an economy, keep the duping and cheating at bay, with a single currency, adding aditional ones will potencially increase those problems.
Nothing about creating an MMO isn't painstakingly hard...but if it's to add to the realisticness of the world, then i would really think about doing it. Problems can always be solved, atleast easier then a maddened online communities happiness :P
But basically, i would just write these ideas down on paper and store them somewhere. Cause these little details are the things that you add after you get something of a storyline or the design of the game going. Since these two things could factor with this idea tremendously.
