You have very valid points, but these points could also be applied to film. Surround has only been around for a few years so experimentation in games and movies of this nature could be used. However, I always like to recommend playing by the "rules" to people who haven't mastered a certain field. In this case it would be audio and the "rules" are "music comes from the front." Most of the time I say this for cinematography, but this can be easily applied to audio. The only reason I recommend that is because playing by the "rules" usually yeilds the best results. One should only break the rules when breaking the rules yeilds an even better and more interesting result. Its hard to say what a better result would be if you haven't mastered the basics, right?
So I agree with what you have to say, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone that isn't a master at audio.
I think experimentation would be interesting. However, if I heard music coming from behind me I'd probably turn surround sound off...or the game I was playing. Don't use me as a judge though, I'm just extremely critical. ;)
