i was woundering what is the best library or api to put sound into my programs and games??
well, a few, free ones that I like are OpenAL, DirectSound, and Fmod. I really like the ease of 3d sounds with openal.

Hey Julio,
Have you been able to compile the openAL libs or a program using openAL under VC++ 5.0 that does not cause linker errors? Whenever it comes time to link in the openAL libs, bang, linker error. All libs and includes are in the right place.

Thanks.

Get BASS: www.un4seen.com/music.

Very simple to set up and work with, very reliable, very fast, packed with features like 3D sound and nice and clear docs and examples.

I prefer FMOD, Its really easy to get running, plays mp3s, does 3d sound, uses A3D and EAX hardware. Its free unless/until your product goes commercial.

If I was looking for a reasonably portable sound API (I am) that is available now and has Windows *and* Mac OS support (and preferably Linux too), what would you folks recommend?

SDL is a pretty good gamedevelopment (graphics, sound etc)library/API.

there are versions for windows, linux,beOS (maybe macOS and other)
it should be very easy to port
(you shouldn''t have to change any of the sound code)
