I'm back, with gifts! Here's the guide I wrote up some time ago for Slackware 10.1.

I really hope that helps!

Thanks, I will test it and see if it works, but I don't recognize "Installpkg" are there a command like that in Debian?

Sorry for the double post

Yeah, installpkg is a Slackware utility. You can get an ATi Linux Driver package specifically tailored for Debian somewhere around the 'net. However, it requires a lot more work.

On a side note, Slackware may not have dependency checking or any of that fancy stuff, but it's rock solid, easy to work with and, well, works.

EDIT - I used the Slackware 10.1 package on linuxpackages.net (I believe that's the site) in the above example.

EDIT2 - It works great with my 9600XT, but the ATi drivers have no support (at all) for the X800 XL chip. Guess what? I bought an X800 XL a month back. Yeah, I'm a tad angry. [lol]

ATi cards can sometimes be better performing than nVidia cards, but with ATIs sucky Linux drivers it's probable that your nVidia card will perform much, much, much better than a similar ATi card on the same Linux machine. Not to mention, you won't get any random crashes like I do.

Cheers!

I never got any random crashes. In fact, my 9600XT performed quite well under Linux.

What card did / do you have?

ATi Radeon 9800 Pro. The new drivers have fixed a vast majority of the crashes (freezes actually - the mouse works (but you can't click anything), no programs seem to continue running, and SSH works but trying to reboot/shutdown/kill X just crashes the computer), but I'm still getting them in a few programs (especially the Cedega ones).

Cheers!
