Well, honestly yes, The cliche was consciously intended. As the design is intended to focus on game play and mechanics. The final intent was to expand on the story and characters after the game mechanics were planned out.
That way mechanics would dictate story and progression rather than the other way around. In the past I've seen the story dictate the mechanics. The result is a combination of mis matching mechanics that make sense in context of the single player game, but not as well in a multiplayer environment.
So yes, the characters and story only have all of a few pages pretty much as place holders. I'm also not much of a novelist, or a story writer, so I didnt want to write myself into a hole because of it. Im just going with "focus on what you do well" and thats that.
Mind you, you bring up some cool points on _where_ to expand the characters so I'll keep that in mind once that needs to be expanded apon, so thanks!
