What is it with RPG games here?
I''ve noticed that a lot of ppl here make 2D RPG games here. I was just wondering why they are so popular? Is it because they are easier to make?
I have no game development experience yet so thats why I''m asking. The reason being is because I want to be involved with a space game (like Tachyon).

I''m guessing alot of people like RPGs. There have been ALOT of really good RPGs coming out. That''s probably why everyone wants to make one. I have no experience making an RPG so I couldn''t tell you how easy it is to make one, but I doubt they''re making them because of they''re easy to make. If they are making them because they think they''ll be simple to make, they just haven''t realized that it takes a long time to develop all the scripting/tiling/etc.

I''ve never played Tachyon but if you want to make an 80''s space game clone, Andre Lamothe''s books are a good place to start. I have Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus and it has really helped me understand what goes into a game.
It''s most likely to be different reasons for every individual. It''s also important to note that a lot of people here who talk about rpg''s are simply doing it becuase they want to enjoy their learning as they probably love rpg''s as Ronald said.
So you like Space games like Tachyon? Sorry i''ve never heard about it. It would be a helpful tip to elaborate when you talk about these things otherwise you''ll probably go unnoticed. Just word it a bit more wisely from now on.

I love RPGs because they offer something other games don''t--depth. (although it could be argued that some don''t have much) The only other genre I like is RTS, because it at least makes you think about what you''re doing. I''m also a hooked D&D player.
That''s why I''m trying to fix the crap in CRPGs. As I see it, they''re taking PnPRPGs and turning them into a computer and taking out the stuff they cant do. which sux. freedom, depth, freedom, and a wide variety of different ways to go about playing. Did I mention freedom to do whatever you want? That''s improtant! I would have liked Baulders Gate if it had let me give up on the quest, become a warlord, and ravage towns across the land. Then convert and become a priest. Then become a renegade and start my own church. And start a civil war. and--I''m getting carried away...

I feel the desire to create RPG[-ish] games more due to the fact that there aren't a lot of good one's out there. I mean, I always feel like they almost capture some really good aspects, but never quite do what I know they could.
I agree C-Junkie. It's as though I like some aspecs of what current RPGs contain, and I can see where they could go with these aspects but I rarely see it go as far as I'd like it to.

I am also making one because I feel that current ones suck and that I can do better. Also, I need a working game so I can model All these damn ideas!

Actually, another reason I just thought of is that RPGs tend to allow for lower technical quality (graphics, sound, etc) if the design and perhaps story is good. So, hobbyists can come up w/ something that relies less on the technical aspects which can be expensive to produce, and just make the gameplay and story good. RTS''s have that quality somewhat too.

My reason for working on rpgs is I tend to get bored of an idea if I don''t have something to work on or think about all the time, and with most other genres, I work out all the design really fast and then comes the hard part of trying to program it. With an rpg, while I''m not programing, or drawing, the graphics, or any of the important stuff, I can be designing it. Because I love to design games, and designing rpgs take the most work, they are the most interesting for me to design.
