Should I quit my job?
Sorry to post here, but I love the people in this forum! :)
OK, I've had a few beers (AKA 2, count 'em 2!) at the moment, not the best time to make such an important decision :)
Yet, basically... working for a national minimum wage job, having to work a constant thursday to sunday inclusive work week... is NOT good for my social life (I now have none).. 12 hours shifts = 48 hour week for measly money.
To top all that off, there's no career prospects, I'll be a security officer until I'm 65!
Unless, however, I quit.
Why the sudden reason to leave this shit hole of a job?.. well...
I phoned up head office to see whether my holiday application had gone thorugh OK, somehow however, please don't ask me how... the manager whom I was speaking to said goodbye, then hung up... i thought "err, stoopid telephone company! disconnecting us like that!" ... then I phoned up a second time... I said "Hello, it's Dave Cradock here again, I'd just like to ask as to why my holiday as been denied, I gave plnety of notice?" ... he then replied with "go away"., then the phone went dead!.. He'd hung up on me?? ... This must seem strange to someone reading this, it did to me, so however I phoned a third and final time (knowing that, for some strange reason he'd hung up on me on purpose)... Thankfully, another (decent/professional manager) answered this time.... I asked "Why was I hung up upon? Who was I speaking to?" the manager replied with a swift and simple "John Hurtridge"... then all became clear... this John Hurtride", (More like John Oh dear! I've hurt my arse ridge through too much shaggin of cactii up my arse) dude is WELL known for being a complete inconsiderate moron... other managers in the office have actually had physical fights with him, (and won :) ), then quit because of him.... these other managers were not morons, I considered Dave Blatchard to be a decent, moral, intelligent person.. yet this John manager, somehow has the magical ability to be a rude f*CKER. This John manager is high up in the company's chain (God knows how), I've heard many a story of him firing people on the spot for "being tired", or "forgetting their tie to work" etc... I believe he is a power hungry (Or summin), moron... someone who has such a small penis that he abuses his given company power over people to make himself feel big or something. However...
I've been thinking that, although I enjoy working as a security guard (Being able to get paid to spend 12 hours a day sitting behind my laptop and program on projects that I want to work on, and getting paid for it!) is cool, the low wage and crappy hours are not really ideal. So I've been thinking of leaving for quite some time.
Being treated rudely by a high up (If a somewhat hated (I do not use that word lightly) manager by virtually all staff, no, ALL staff)... it was the final straw, I've currently written this....
"Dear Altek,
As required by my contract of employment, I hereby give you 1 weeks’ notice of my intention to leave my position as a security guard.
I wish both whoever is reading this and Altek every good fortune and I would like to thank you for having me as part of the company.
Yours sincerely,
David Cradock.
"
Should I send it in?
I'll be unemployed?
Yet... Sure, looking for another job first would be good, but it's a matter of principal... I refuse to work (Err program) my butt off, just to line this arrogant arsehole's pockets with money. I want to show him that, if you are rude.. I will not tolerate you.#Rudeness = needless. He (IMHO) is the most biggest knob in existense.
I'm leaving Altec, I'd better sort out my finances (Lucky I've paid off all my debts eh?).. I'll cut up my credit card... sell two of my laptops, hell... maybe I'll have enuff cash left over to go canoeing through Canada or something!
Anyways.. your thought please (Except, don't quit it's wrong!) :),
Dave.
Tough question. On the one hand, he wants to get rid of you for some reason, so staying around will piss him off, which is good. On the other hand, you can quit your job and have the satisfaction of knowing you'll never see the jerk again.
Then again, it sounds like other people have actually managed to physically beat the guy before resigning... IMO this is too good an opportunity to miss. Ask them how they did it. :)

I agree with anon, unless you are loaded then there is no point quitting unless you already have something else lined up.

See if getting laid-off is an option? Perhaps a severance pay is not that far out of reach!
There is never going to be the perfect job. There are always going to be people that treat you rudely. There are always going to be people that don't like you and/or you don't like. Even if you were programming your games for a living. Everything changes when you HAVE to do it every day.
You sound like someone who has more potential than being just a security guard, but in my experience, anyone I've known who quits a job as soon as there is something they don't like never excell beyond a security guard level job. Don't get me wrong, I don't see anything wrong with being a security guard, only STAYING a security guard (or equivalent) for the rest of your life if you don't want to.
Try to go to school in between working, and if you already have an education beyond high school...use it! Even if you can't get any more money than you make now with your education, it is still the better route because you will be getting experience. Get any job that will give you any kind of experience in the area you want a career in, even if it is at the bottom of the food chain, and even if it is for less money. If you can afford to just quit your current job and have no income, then you can afford to take a pay cut by taking another job.
I have a bachelors in computer science. I graduated a month before 9/11. There were absolutely no jobs for entry level computer programmers during this time. After almost a year of searching I found a crappy job that offered be a salary that was below the national average for entry level programmers. Four years and two jobs later I have more than trippled my salary. Why? because I sucked it up and worked my butt of to get experience.
Four years ago I could have taken a job in another area for a little more money than the original salary I took, or I could have been lazy and mooched off my parents and laid around game programming all day in my room. If I had taken either of these two options, I would still be in that same position today.
Anyway....I guess what I want to say is to make the decisions in your life that will make you a better person forever, not the decisions that are going to give you immediate satisfaction.
My advice is to go to school if your not already, and in the mean time find any kind of job that you can that is even remotely related to what you are going to school for. Once you find another job, then quit the one you have. Before you know it you will be done with school and eventually you will have a really good job. Then I guarantee that if you go and hunt down John Hurtride, you will find that he will be in the same place he is today.

I bet that, if that asshole hear, that you leave. He will celebrate it. Truely, if you now get out of there, the he will smile and laugh. but if you're staying, he will jump off a roof. So, don't let other persons control your life. You decide what you want to do... STart a company that programing application (or something), and show that asshole that you have energy, and you're not belong in that smelly little stinky Company.
Don't leave, if you haven't got a new job... That will be terrible... to be unemployed... i mean

I suggest looking for another job, when you find one quit your current one gracefully. Don't burn any bridges, but if you get the chance for an exit interview with a different manager, be honest with them as to why you're quitting. This way, if you ever find out that the a**hole manager has left you could always concider getting another job at the company.
