Character optimization in 3ds max 5

I have a textured character model with 6000 polygons, and when I optimize the character (with optimize or multires modifier) down to 2000 polygons the texture looks bad on the model. Can I optimize the textured high poly model down to low poly model without "texture looks bad" effect? I'm using 3ds max 5.
