newbie - Lights like Voodoo lights Screen Saver

How can I implement a particle/object that shines like a the lights of the Voodoo Lights Screen Saver ? I was playing with the material GL_SHININESS whithout getting close to what I want. Any pointers ? Thanks a lot, guima.
never seen the screen save but..

don''t think shininess has anything to do with lighting.. or reflecting light.. try creating either a reflective surface (see tutorials) or a light source encapsulated by a semi transaparent object and around that object have a small particle system that shoots out reflective objects.. that would create small pulsating reflective balls or objects.. .. sort of like the center of lens flares.. MAYBE!!

By the way,

When I said GL_SHININESS I meant GL_EMISSION in glMaterialfv...

Anyway I''ll try encapsulated light source or maybe just a reflective object encapsulated by a semi transparent object.
