Two great great games that hold a special place in my heart:
Beneath A Steel Sky
The Dig
I would STILL play them today if I could run them on windows :P
Some people just don't realize that game graphics or physics are not important when everything else is incredibly fun and addictive, and well polished! Those games made me want to play them to the end because I wanted to know how will it all end, not because I felt like I should play it out because I bought it. Most of todays games are just nothing more than a waste of time.
Old Games and What Made Them Great
Dangerous Dave guys, now THAT is a classic.
IMHO, games back then didn't have much to do with graphics AS WELL with gaming.
I mean, all you had to do is jump, shoot, get the trophy (Dave related) and get into the door which will lead you to the next level, and so on and so forth like so until you've finished the game...
You should also keep in mind that the simplicity level of a gmae will end eventually in a game where you can't do much stuff... I mean even the plot of the game, everything's related to the so called "simplicity" thingy...

SMB3, Contra, Battle of Olympus, Wing Commander.
SMB3: because i love turning into Raccoon, Frog, and Hammer Brother Mario. Great Levels.
Contra: Frankly, I've never liked any of other Contra but this one. And who can resist -- UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, B, A, Select, Start.
Battle of Olympus: I love Greek Mythology and I never got to beat it.
Wing Commander: Is when I fell in Love with cockpit shooter/simulations. Voice Acting and Storyline is still amusing to me as well.
...and the obligatory Secret of Mana: the only game IMHO to do Real Time RPG right.

If you look hard enough, there is software out there (ScummVM or something like that?) that lets you play Beneath a Steel Sky under Windows - so get on and play it! And watch out for the upcoming sequel!

Who still remembers "Golden Axe"? Who will deny that from there came some famous names like Everquest and such? Who knows that this game was created by a guy who was completely addicted to Dungeons and Dragons, 1st edition, but had moved away from his group of players?
Personally, I would deny that Golden Axe led to Everquest. Everquest came from other online games that predated things like Golden Axe.

(Hell, I 've never been able to cross the river in SRAM on my old Amstrad 6128. Anyone who can tell me how to get across and what to give that damned elf will be awarded with my eternal friendship for relieving my mind from numbing obsession for the last 15 years...)
Download the solution here if you want. Looks like something to do with eyes. (My French is rusty.)

Haha sweet! Thank you.
This means that I won't be going to my University for the next few days.
Weather they were "great" is debatable-they seem "good/great" now because they were accessible games without bug's (unlike the many flawed games today)-and repetition was accepted/expected.
Nothing should be in a game if it is not needed because it may induce some kind of frustration for the player-a boring task/a drawn out cut scene-if they help the story and are injected in small/absorbable bursts then it's cool-but your not there to watch a movie which certain games do not grasp.
Many old games encompassed all aspects of a comprehensive game needed without all the flashy movies/bonuses-Accessible/intuitive controls, engaging style of play (weather you’re facing off in joust or blasting rocks in asteroids), steady learning curve and limitless difficulty.
You could pick up and play these games all the time. There was no story/real atmosphere so you did not have to be on your own to be taken by the game and it did not take ages to get underway.
Many of the old games "gameplay" wise are already perfect.
