Character modelling in MAX 4

I've been character modelling in MAX 4 for a while now but struggle to produce the results im looking for. I've looked at a lot of tutorials and read about many different approaches to take to charcter modelling and was hoping someone could give me some advice about which to use. Previously i've tried Spline modelling and editable meshes, and have come pretty close to what i was looking for. I've read about using NURBS or extruding patches but havn't yet tried these out. Is there one method that anyone would recommend? Or even any essential points to always bear in mind? I'm interested in making both models for games and also more complex models, are there different approaches for each? I'm really aiming for realistic looking human figures rather than cartoony / anime style that i've seen a lot of tutorials for.
