well nautilus is fast you think? then you should really try windows explorer.
it blows nautilus out of the water when you browse directories with images and thumbnails.
I like OS X's file browser, especially the 3 panel view. I doubt I'd switch from nautilus, though, because it's fine for my uses and it integrates well into gnome.

I know everyone bashes Konq but to me it's like a trip back to Windows and explorer/browser integration (which IMHO isn't really necessary - maybe just a very quick and effecient HTML preview but not a full browser). Since I open and close Konq sessions all the time I really think real-time performance would be good.

But whoever said this was right, the file manager bit of Konqueror (not counting the load time, resource hogginess) is fairly good and I'll try to duplicate its (relative) ease of use.

Maybe add a plugin interface while I'm at it :).

Cheers!

[edit] Oh, BTW bytecoder - if you could point me to a screenshot of the OSX file browser that would be great. Thanks!

An idea I had for a filemanager a little whil ago that used tabs/lines of buttons, to represent the folders, then adding multiple lines to represent the folder heirsrchy. The project fell through when I got frustrated with the boost library, but It's still a feature I would like added to another manager like konqueror.
Here's a good picture I found of Finder with multiple panels:
But you could go as far as this:
BRING BACK THE BLACK (or at least something darker)

This sounds like a good idea, but where you have said that windows explorer is fast (and implied not necissarily resource hungry), I would have to disagree a little there ;-).

Things to include: Address bar, Tabs ?, Folder Tree, WinXp style tasks/info panel, Thumbnail view.

Go for it!

what about Endeavor? Isn't it already like explorer and lightweight(and powerful too).

Can you please supply a link? I tried this, but came up with nothing.

windows explorer sucks. best file manager is Total Commander. you can control it only from keyboard, but for the special tasks you can use such "mouse oriented" features as and (wich are inaccessible in Midnight Commander ;)

so... make it equaly comfortable for mouse and keyboard using. I would like to recommed to use Midnight Commander egine, but with pure GUI :)

You make it sound like you cant controll explorer with only the keyboard.
