API's
There used to be a graphics API by the name of glide. It's obsolete and no longer used.

there is allso (im now only speaking of graphics api's)
SDL - no 3d, only 2d and can do some other cool stuff to.
OpenRL - this one uses the second finest kind of 3d rendering known to man, raytracing.
OpenES - it's a shrunken version of OpenGL
OpenSL - only 2D like SDL, but without the other goodies.
+ many many more.
and i think matrox had one to when they first came out with their mystiqe card a whole lotta years ago, but they abandoned this pretty fast when 3DFX and glide came.
3DFX is now dead and devoured by nvidia, good ting though, because nvidia really kicked openGL into the public eye.
