Exporting from Maya as an OBJ

I made a .obj model loader for C++/OpenGL, and I know it works because I ran it with a model I found online and it came out textured and everything. However , when a friend of mine made a model for me using our schools copy of Maya, it wasn't textured. Does this have anything to do with exporting from Maya, because we encountered something about not being able to export a shader or something like that. Can maya texture something without using shaders, or do I have to export the model with a "simpler" program like Milkshape or Blender? Thanks in advance.
