They are mediocre tools that the Linux community as a whole has been tricked into believing to be powerful.

I dare you to say that on slashdot! (I partially agree though)

It got me thrown out of #debian, in any case.

no, i didn't read this whole topic cuz it's huge...

how's linux? well, if u try using slackware without knowing what you're doing... you'll hate linux. BUT, if you know what you're doing, linux is a very nice os.
you'll have a very nice selection of FREE software that's almost as good, if not better than the windows "equivalent".

overall i'd say linux is a complete bitch to start out with, but after only 2 weeks or so i don't even use windows anymore. :)
This space for rent.

What are the chances of being able to mess up your windows with installing a build?

Probably didnt happen to most, but there was a problem with one of the latest builds of the linux kernel (somewhere around 2-2.5 i think) that could bugger up the partition table of your hard drive if you duel booted, making it impossible to load either one of the installed OS or both.

When the problem occured on my harddrive, it was so bad I couldnt format the drive, reinstall anything, or load anything. I had to shell out £120 for a new drive.

This occured when I installed Mandrake 10 and dual booted winXP using the out of the box gui dual boot program (can't remeber its name).

This problem alone (well, the fact that this problem cost me over £100) was enough to make me not reinstall Linux. I want to at some point, but will only do it when I have a dedicated Linux machine.

I've been using it for awhile. (a few days).

There were a few quirks (Like a had a bad keyboard, so a played around with the keyboard settings. When i got the new one, i thought there was a problem with it (i ended up getting pound signes ect). Turned out i set it for UK keyboard).

The clock decided to go and give me gmt instead of the correct time. But i managed to change it. (a few change regions + a reboot got rid of it).

Also, i've had my comp up for about a week strait, without it
1. Freezing
2. Ever becoming unresponcive or
3. Crashing

I like it. (konquerer would be great. If it didn't have that lcose tab thing right on the tabs..... i would like to turn that off somehow. Its nearly better then mozilla).

Also - i changed the colourscheme for gamedev.
Its now a white backround, with blue links, and a bit larger font writing.

Kopete isn't being too user friendly, but i figured how to use it, and its doing what its supposed to.

Overall: 5 stars!

Click here to patch the mozilla IDN exploit, or click Here then type in Network.enableidn and set its value to false. Restart the browser for the patches to work.
Here's a good tip for any new Linux user wanting to move from a bootable CD to an installed Linux: Get a second hard drive. No need to mess with partitions or anything and hoping that WIndows wil survive the partition. I can pick up a new 80 Gig HDD for a few tenners over here. Better yet, grab an old one. 10 Gig is enough to run Linux, a ton of apps and have some room to spare as well. Put HDD in case, boot from install CD, divide new HDD in two partitions (say... 60%-70% ext2/3 for Linux, the rest as FAT32 to share files with Windows). Install. Reboot. Enjoy.

Oh, and I second (sixth?) the motion for Ubuntu.

I've been using Fedora Core 3 for the past 3 to 4 months and have had a fairly easy time of it. The install was a bit qwerky and they still don't support my laptop video card for 3d acceleration. I have been using KDevelop and SDL and for the most part it works fine. Mostly all I do with my Linux box is surf the web and check email. For now, I am still more productive on Windows for development.

Do I like Linux? Yep. Will I totally replace Windows with it? Why would I, as a would be game programmer, block out the lions share of the market?!?! Like someone else said above, find the features you like the best and use them to be productive.
