Check out both the game dictionary and the gamedev.net article systems. The gamedev system is a bit more advanced than the dictionary and both include backend administrative software.

They are flexible enough to serve under these purposes.

Suddenly this thread has silenced.
Is it becaues people were asked to put their money where their mouths are? Or is it simply that you american dudes sleep at such odd hours of the day (I, in contrast, have already been to work for close to 8 hours now).

I hope (and believe) it is the latter.

hey who gave americans exclusive right to sleep at odd hours

im not american yet i sleep at the oddest hours

id love to chip in but am caught up till the 3rd
I received a nice email from Myopic Rhino with a bit more details about the system and help we could expect from GDNet if we decide to use their software/site for hosting this.

From what I could see there would only be one moderator of the site, and only the moderator would be able to start a new thread (which in our case would be a tutorial on some topic). If this is correct it means that whoever moderates it would have quite a job in reading through and posting tutorials from other authors. Of course, once a thread is started anyone could post questions, additions, etc. regarding it.

So the question to you guys now is: Is this something we would want to do? Or should we try to make something of our own?
I think the pro''s and con''s are pretty obvious here, but I''ll post a couple anyway.

Pro''s:
- Hosted as a part of GDNet (can handle high-traffic, has many visitors, etc.)
- Fits in with the existing community here.
- We won''t have to make anything of our own.

Con''s:
- One moderator only(?)
- Only moderator able to start a new thread
- We won''t get to make anything of our own.

Thoughts etc. very welcome.

the server isnt the problem, cause on http://www.starcraft3d.net, we have unlimited bandwith and so ..

its a full server, not just a domain name llinking onto xoom or something like this

i''m really excited (interested.. ) whats going on with this post, and, because i havent the time this week, lets collect all the ideas we have, then lets organice them and create it after all. that would be best, because then we could implement all the ideas of all the guys

i propably create a "demo-site", wich dont have any functionalyty, but wich shows, how it looks like (post/replies/tutrial/links/andandand blabla)

schuuu tomorrow

we wanna play, not watch the pictures

If that's not the help you're after then you're going to have to explain the problem better than what you have. - joanusdmentia

What kind of functionality would starcraft3d.net offer?
Full support for perl/CGI? Support for JavaServlets? Support for XML/XSL? php?

Well, there are additional pros.

- We already have an existing subscriber base in the message boards, so we could hook that into the article system.
- We get 2.3 million page views a month as it is, so promoting it on our site only would still help to make it popular. Additionally, we have connections to a lot of highly visited game development and gaming sites to help promote it. More visitors means more code snippets and tutorials.
- The system is essentially done. So it begs the question of whether you want to spend time actually sharing informative content or mulling around for months developing the site. I say months because that''s how long it took to develop the current state of our article system and forums. Which again, would be available for use.
- It fits in with the forums here as well

I''m for hosting it in Gamedev
I agree those are serious pro''s. And I tend to agree that we should host it here. I say tend, because for me it is important that the system offered here have the flexibility that we would want. Specifically: does the system here allow for more than one moderator? I think it may be quite a burden to place on a single person. Personally I would enjoy doing it, but it would be easier if the work involved could be shared between more than one person.

But in conclusion: It is my personal opinion that the advantages of hosting it on GDNet by far outweighs the disadvantages. So that''s one vote for keeping it here.
