Suse Linux Pro 9.2 & X server
I am trying to install the Nvidia drivers, and it tells me to quit X server, so I press ctrl + alt + backspace, but that automatically restarts X server. How do I shut it down and keep it down till I start it up again?
Alright I got it to stop, but now I can't get it to start it says something about the Screen config not right. . .
I don't know about suse 9.2, but in 9.1 you installed the drivers for nVidia by doing the Online Update in YaST. (It was listed under "Available Patches" or something like that).
For all of the other distros, you have to run the driver installer after killing the x server. The easiest way to do that is just to go to a root shell and drop to runlevel 3 or so ("init 3").
