you will need to purchase 3dmax. Which is usually out of the question. Or get a friend who owns it to convert the file for you.

Trust me, I've looked :) and looked and looked and looked... There isn't even a dodgy backwater kgb funded max converter... *sigh*

Milkshape with gmax(free 3ds max) should be able to do it.

let say I have milkshape software, but how to convert .max to obj...
If i am using 3d max studio, how to change it to .obj format or .asc format.

Export the file to a .3ds format from 3d studio (or gmax) . Then import that file into milkshape. Then export that file to an obj.

Import the obj into Milkshape, export to 3ds and then import into max.
