What do you think is the best manner to communicate between game and player: assuming the player is the character (allways talking to "you" or character name) or having the character communicate with the player... [Edited by - the_cyberlord on December 7, 2004 12:49:35 PM]
If I understand you correctly then I would guess that depends on whether you want the player to feel like they ARE the character or whether you want them to feel more like a 3rd party viewing the story/puppeteer pulling the strings of the story.

If your player character turns around and curses at the player for making them do something stupid or gets impatient if you are idle too long it ruins the effect of being IN the game in a way.

I personally like it when I feel like I AM the character as opposed to a 3rd party.

You got it!
Any one has more opinions?
I like being the character as well. I felt like Morrowind was pretty cool about it all in the intro.
I like to be the characters if I can have more control. I hate to be blamed for some action I didnt do really. If I have sporadic choice to do, I prefer to be like a god watching over my fellow puppet ;)

I agree with Sinistrad, either could be the right choice depending on the effect you are going for. For story-based games the choice is naturally affected by what you want to have happen in your story - it's easier to do comedy or surrealism if the player isn't the character, but if the player is the character it's easier to do intense emotion, moral quandries, or anything else that requires the audience to identify strongly with the character.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

aha, yeah yeah... I get it. So for example if you make a LotR style game and you are Frodo or something like that, it's much more fun for most of the people here... And can someone give a good example for the other manner?
