Actually that's a really good one. Not only is it effective, but it's repeatable and could be used by NPCs themselves when they want to get someone to do something.
Anything that can be used by NPCs themselves is extra valuable to me. THanks :)

No, by all means continue!

Perhaps some form of cult the player could start if he's charismatic enough. So you'd have to fake miracles, give orratories, etc. It probably would still involve some one-on-one interaction with the more skeptical NPC's, but brainwashing can be lots of fun.

That's a very interesting idea. I like it a lot. I was considering having churches, so maybe I could generalize it so there are groups that are based on religion and when you're in charge of one you have certain options.

Alright, i'll start off saying that you have a very good idea brewing here :)
Secondly. Regarding almost everything, there ought to be a limit on how far you can go until they refuse totaly or just get mad at you.
Thirdly. You need to think very carefully how you are going to interact with the NPCs, how do you tell them that their daughter is very dead unless they do something.
Lots of interesting ideas. I've always wanted to do a "Role-Playing Strategy" game, which (in my mind) would be a RTS from a single person's point of view as opposed to a "god mode".
So you'd be the "king" in charge of the army, and you wouldn't be able to "see" anything except what was immediately around your king unit. Your awareness of the battlefield would only be updated by your units "reporting" back to you, or by magic.
I'd need a much larger line of sight for the king unit than contemporary RTS' employ, and I'd also need to make use of much more advanced unit AI. That, or the player would rapidly become turned off by the stupid things his units did when out of his influence.
Anyway, I just think it'd be really neat to have to send messages to allies, to hope the squad you sent to secure the bridge was successfull so your merchants can get through, etc., etc. It opens up whole new realms of gameplay, methinks.
Just a few thoughts. I think you're leaning more towards the RPG side though.

I was thinking of using messangers who would deliver letters and stuch (since I'm planning on a medicval setting).
I think this could be interesting because the player or NPCs might intercept the message. So, you may happen upon a messagenger and see that someone has kidnapped someone. So, maybe you'd want to go save the person hoping you'd get something in return.
