New Features in XOrg-X11 6.8
I just got it running today, and wow is this composite stuff cool. Of course it's rather useless with that much transparency, but it does show the effect nicely.
It's in a rather raw form, though. Tooltips and drop-downs don't inherit translucency of the parent. The drop-shadows draw on the taskbar. You have to run a utility to set translucency on a per-window basis.
Still, very impressive. I've got an nvidia card, which accels it, and don't feel any delay. Once integrated into window managers it'll be awesome!
If you want to get it running, here's the HOWTO I followed: http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Xorg_X11_and_Transparency
