I use lib3ds for loading 3DS files. It's fairly extensive and easy to use. Good luck.

You can also go here for a decent .3ds tutorial, and of course here for a pretty good .ms3d lesson. However, the shortcoming of both of these is that they do not include code for keyframe animation. If you have any questions regarding these tutorials, please feel free to PM me. HTH.
