are doom3's system requirements to high for practicality?
i was just wondering,
does doom3's seemingly(to me anyways) monstorous system requirements bring down the sales at all?
"am i supposed to be able to do sh_t with this?" oink snort
well yes of course they bring down the sales, but you always have to find a balence in computer game design.
Doom3's target is the high end gaming market. Even if the system specs were low, few people outside of the hardcore gamers that (mostly) posses the l33t hardware would be interested in it.

Still, I dont think it hurt them much, if at all.

Actually it has always been planned to be ported to the Xbox. Unfortunately for Sony freaks, the PS2 isn't powerful enough to play Doom3 in it's full glory..
Most of my friends (including myself) purchased Doom3. For a serious gamer, the min specs are laughable.. XP1800, 256MB RAM, and a Geforce3 64MB can play the game.. (I've seen it done).

Neither is the XBox for that matter. Not to knock any of the consoles, but I feel that nothing less than a 'recommended spec' PC will do it any justice whatsoever.

XBox is definetly powerful enough. It has a GeForce3/4 caliber graphics card. The CPU overhead may be an issue, but the graphics driver is so increadibly thin, it is using much less CPU (on PC's the gfx driver is using like 20+% of the CPU, get the evaluation version of Vtune and check it out!)
If you look at what Doom3 does, multi-texturing, bump mapping and stencil shadows, they are all within the capabilities of the XBox. Not to mention the resolution being run is in the 320x240 range.
I'm sure XBox will run it quite nicely. Now only if you didn't have to use a controller ;)

i just witnessed it being played on an athlon 1.4ghz with a gf2 card in it at the lan last weekend. dont know about you, but i was quite impressed. [it still looked pretty dang good] Of course it didnt run at 30fps, but a good 15fps is decently playable for the realitively slow paced game it is. [my friend played it for 6+ hrs straight during the lan, so it certainly didnt detract from the game too much]
edit: hmm, just realized something, that was without any of the cfg tweaks or pk4 extracts...wonder if id make a reasonable difference on that low spec of a machine
i really dont see how anyone who plays games today [even casually] could consider that a high spec...let alone "monstorous" requirements. alot of other games wont even run on shader-less cards, they just pop up a message box saying "sucks to be you", no fallback at all.
i find it pretty amazing that a poor gf2 can still keep up with the times decently well, even though its what? 4 generations behind. the much faster paced [and less graphically intensive of course] ut2k4 runs around 30fps on a gf2 as well, ive been quite impressed at how well unreal/doom engines scale. its nice to see older comps can still be used as extras at a lan

320x240 is what the Playstation renders at.
XBox games are rendered at 640X480. I am pretty sure the XBox version will be scaled down greatly in terms of texture resolution(64MB Shared Ram)/polygon count, but it wont be noticed on a television because most people will be atleast 2-3 meteres away from screen unlike a monitor where the distance is 20-30cm.
Fillrate is one place consoles can save on big time, because they only need to render at a maximum of 640X480, unless Anti-Aliasing is used by consoles/games which support it.
