Hey, does anyone have any idea's for animating a chainsaw type weapon for use in a game? (specifically Call Of Duty, but any info would be appreciated). I'ts for a sci-fi mod im doing a little work for, wanted some melee weapons and I fell in love with the chainsaw from Doom 3 :D
Well, there's this old Blender tutorial for animating the tracks on a tank. I'm sure you could adapt the same method for animating the blade chain on your saw.

Call of Duty with chainsaws? Mmm...

I suppose it depends on how detailed of a model you wanted. The brute force way would be to model a bunch of chainsaw teeth and simply hand model them in the animation of them moving around the blade. Another, perhaps cheaper, way would be to use a bitmap / 2d plane / whatever that look like the teeth of a chainsaw. You can then animate this texture simply by offsetting the texture's X value (either at runtime in the program or you can actually make the animation). This might not look as desired though, but it should suffice especially since chainsaw teeth are rather thin.

Heh heh, thanks guys, it looks like im gonna have to manually animate each tooth to move around :/

It won't just be Call Of Duty with chainsaws, it's gonna be science fiction based, and i wanna change the balance so there isn't so much sniping and people can have a little up close and personal melee combat :D
