theres alot of mods out there that have plenty of good artists working on them (these mods will be free.. but of course you will need the original version of UT2004 to play it , which.. well isnt free) but still.. good total conversion mods

i don't get it... are you talking about speechless looking games or addictive games. Most addictive games are small, entertaining with that hook you can't get off(like minesweeper, i play it every day ;) ). None will give away their creativity product for free if it costs alot of their time & imaginagination. i agree with FeralOfEclecticWizard. I'm 21 now(i know i'm still young) but if have to pay the rent & for living, you don't have much time to spend on free projects. As i'm working for company that develops business projects(yeah yeah - i'm hobbyist & not working in the industry), i'm earning enough to afford myself to live like i want to(not what i have to). Let's get more serious to things... If you have a sponsor(eg parents) then you can do whatever you want, but once it hits your pocket - things change. that's the reality we have to face. Life is rough, and so are we... ;). i don't see anywhere soon J.Carmack making a game for free, cuz that's what he does for living...
The real question should be why hasn't a decent open art movement cropped up? It's not like cooperative talent is impossible... I seem to recall a certain paint program that illustrates my point.
