how effective do you think the 'help wanted' section is - if payment is mentioned. or in general basically paying people beer money wages + stake in projects sucesses. I know that budding writers write to magazines and spend many hours on it getting like £5 payment for a short story. - but they get to add something to their CV. in a similar way maybe we could try. I give you £50 if you do X for me.
Ineffective. I go there looking for paid sound/audio work and consistently fail to find any. "Pay when we're done" or "cut of the sales" essentially equates to "nothing". My services are worth more than that.

The Gamedev Help Wanted is more for the indie developer. If you are looking for paid positions, the GameDev Jobs page or other websites such as Gamasutra are more geared towards financially stable projects.

@Zircon: I would recommend visiting the above mentioned websites if you are seeking a payed position. But dont limit yourself too much- on the Reverie Entertainment LLC team, even though we have not yet sold the game- have worked out deals with all 15 staff members, 2 agencies, 1 outsourcing studio, several different business affiliates, 1 staff of legal representatives, 1 music and FX company, as well as bringing in great quality talent from large "AAA" developers including Lucasarts. Keep in mind the quality of the product the team is developing. Alot of industry brands out there are willing to work out deals with non financed companies if the products quality is good and they are know the studio will soon be financed. (i.e. We just worked out an Affiliation deal with ATI Technologies this past month.)

Sorry to ramble a bit there, just dont limit yourself too much when job browsing, never know when you might be passing up a great opportunity. :)

I regularly check both sites. No positions for composers/sound engineers/sound producers. When there are (which is rare), they often require you to move. I'm not ready to do that.

so - cut of sales in future - beer money now wouldnt motivate?

quite a few people, at a time, myself included - was eager to simply have my work shown to aid chance of employment.

I would imagine that people who want in - but cant get a position or just want to do something in their spare time might prefer say £100 for completion of a segment or something than only hope of eventual dreamland sales.

Terrain Engine for example.
