I think this one would have potential if given enough time to develop a polish. Military shooters are all the rage right now, so what I propose is a military action game where you take the role of a roman soldier.I call it.....military hack & slash.(gasp!):O the sword fighting mechanics would be A main feature(not the only one) to make combat deeper and more involving.(wich in turn make it addictive and fun, whats the point of it if its boring). So I was thinking of something along the principles of the sword fighting mechanics of DIE BY THE SWORD.I just played the demo to test the combat system, sh*t its annoying and sluggish, but it can be used with a few (well a LOT) of fixes and additions. think of the battles, epic figths with a LOT of troops on screen. but also climatic individual battles between the "heroes" of both oppossing armies.(most recently think of TROY and GLADIATOR) both 1st and 3rd person perspectives included.(I would like the 1st person more but thats just me) other weapons of the era you could use would be bows, spears(wich you can throw too) and etc, etc. What I need would be ideas for ANY gameplay feature (be it sword combat, the bow, etc;believable or realistic I dont care its just gotta be playable and fun) mission structure(mission-based like all military action games now OR free-form in wich the orders are issued in real-time and you have to march to the field and all, etc) and real battle tactics used by the romans(websites and pics would be appreciated) (mmmm thats a lot of etc's) the game is not in active development, hell it may never be made but I have a lot of fun thinking of different game experiences and mechanics; but help is very appreciated. please let me know what you think of it and any additions you would like to include.

Sounds good, but I think Rome:Total War has it covered. It is not out yet, but just looking at the screenshots it seems like what you just described.

I read it that we were talking about more of a first person game not a stratergy based game.

First person isn't going to show off the fighting moves, etc, very well for this sort of thing. I'd think something along the lines of the Dynasty Warriors series of games would be perfect (with, of course, Roman figures rather than Chinese ones).

I was thinking the same thing as he described his game. Either that or Drakenguard... (which wasn't as good).

Anyway, a game like this requires several things to be really cool - different sides to play, lots of characters with completely different animations and attacks, upgradable weaponry, epic battles based on their real counterparts, intelligent AI, stunning visuals, and a compelling storyline.

Well actually, most of that applies to pretty much every game.

But if you really want some good ideas, pick up a copy of Dynasty Warriors 4, (or when it comes out :) Samurai Warriors!
hmm sounds good but I was thinking of this game like a military game not really action-fantasy, with real tactics and weapons.
the different sides thing doesnt sound bad at all;)

I just noticed I made no mention of graphics at all (or any of the superficial features)
the main objective is to make the combat just fun to play no matter what mission you play.

Err... okay. I may not understand what you consider action-fantasy, but if you're looking at a game staged in the Roman era, you're looking at making some stuff up.

Granted, you can try to be as historically accurate as possible, but in all honesty, things will be made up.

(but is that not what you meant?)

Finding real tactics and weaponry of the Roman army isn't all that hard, because they are pretty well documented. Just [google] and you can find cool stuff like this just about everywhere. AI for this wouldn't be impossible to create, just _fun_. Same with weapons.

EDIT: but combat wise? Would you as a player be fighting in the formation? or controlling the units in the formation? Or both?

it'll be cool if you could have theif game style bow/arrows, and spears. And the sword if you swing it depending on your mouse movement.

well the plan is you play a single soldier, for the immersion factor, but I think sometimes(or always) you could issue orders to your formation.
about having to make stuff up, youre probably right but I dont want to get out of context(like having superpowers and things like that).
I see it as a very action heavy game but thats doesnt mean you can charge at a formation of archers and expect to survive, you have to be very strategic-minded, think your actions, flank your opponents, ambush them, etc.
You are no a sort of demi-god who can take arrows, spears and stabbings and still be standing at the end of the day (well unless the wounds caused by those are very minor injuries:P)
