All I want is a simple file converter. Apparently, that's too much to ask for.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's run into this roadblock, either. When I run into simple problems that I can't get around, it drives me into massive frustration. This is one of those problems.
I model my very simple models in Lightwave. I program my very simple games with DirectX, and therein lies the conflict. In order to use my models, I need them in .x format. In order to get them into .x format, I need a converter. You should know where this is going by now.
I've searched around the forums, (and YES, I've Googled it...) for the whole of today and numerous times in the past looking for a simple .lwo -> .x file converter. One that can convert UV textures would also be nice, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
So please, if someone could recommend to me a simple program that can convert .lwo files to .x files, I would be very appreciative. Right now, game programming has become a hobby that I hope will develop into a career, but it's going nowhere if there's nothing on the screen to be seen.
Und so weiter. Na ja?
google for "lightwave directx", one of the links points to a plugin for lightwave that will allow you to export to a .x file

I guess Google really can solve any problem. I can't believe I didn't find that. >_< I haven't checked to see if it holds UV coords, though I think it does.
THANK YOU!!!

I'm a 3dsmax user so I don't know if Lightwave comes with an SDK (though I would assume it would). Why not write your own exporter? Spare the reinvention of the wheel speech, this is what I do and think it's by far the best route. It works exactly as I want and expect it to. I like using directx but using their .x files, albeit easy, is just a little to close to Microsoft for me. But that's just me. You should do what works best for you.

There is a DirectX File export that supports bone animation.

If you don't mind dropping the cash, RightHemisphere's Deep Explorer does an excellent job of converting Lightwave scene files into .X files. It'll convert UV maps and animations over just fine, too.
