Linux: fan whirrs like crazy/Windows: silent

Explanatory. Does it have anything to with these things called ACPI options? I don't understand how an OS can control the fan movement, I don't know...it gets REALLY annoying, because my fan(s) are SUPER loud... thanks, Cipher3D

I had a similar problem on a distro I used to use (xandros). I think it was the fan on the graphics card which would be allowed to speed up when the computer was being taxed but wouldn't slow down.

What distro is it and do you know whether it's the graphics card or not?

Sorry I have no idea how to fix it!
Heh, my graphics card doesn't have a fan. I have Slackware 10. Hm I think I'll just enable ACPI options, the only logical course of action.
