Im determined to get some help with this. Ok im in my final year at university studying a games computing degree. For my final year project i want to explore the audio side of games. The project needs to be technical and should avoid titles like "sound and music in computer games or sound design" I was wondering if any of you people know of a good project i could undertake or carry on? i already have a degree in music technology so all the technical side of the music i have covered, its this damn computing bit that is getting on my end. So. What im asking is a. - Can anybody suggest a project i can research and explore? b. - Resesearch sources, contacts to games companys or audio people (ive got all the links like gamasutra and the igda and everything that google brings) ive contacxted a load of people from both sites and got very little response back Ive started to investigate directmusic/sound and toying with the idea of trying to build an interactive mixer. ive tried to learn directx but im getting nowhere as i cant seem to find any sources that will teach me from scratch. Can anyone direct me to useful links to beginners directx - im pretty good with c++. So is there anyone reading this board that could help me at all thanks a lot for any help.

If you're looking for a project, how about doing something cool (and open ended) like "accurately simulating" a real sound environment with a sound engine? You could cover things like doppler effect, high frequency falloff over distance, sound delays, underwater acoustics, etc.

Regardless of that idea, you should check out using something like FMOD rather than deal with DirectX's audio stuff yourself:

It's free to use for non-commercial products, but that's not to say it's not commercial-grade. I'm using it for my current project (PS2/Xbox/PC), Heroes of the Pacific: www.heroesofthepacific.com. It's a great lightweight engine that can get you up and running quickly with support for MOD files, MP3s, memory resident samples, streaming audio support, etc.

WAW. Ill have a look at that. What exactly does FMod do tho. Dont forget this project determines my overall grade so its got to ground break something and have plenty of technicality.

So. Im gonna have a look at fmod. what i would really really really like to do is an interactive audio mixer, this seems like new ground but its where do i start with something like that.

thanks for the info im extremely grateful for this, any pother help would be great.
sos that last post was me.......in case you couldnt tell :D
