nforce2 audio problem with Slack10/kernel 2.6.7
sorry i'm badgering you guys so much... i'm having problems with ALSA and my nforce 2 onboard audio. i've looked around the forums here and i've tried to solve it every way described in the replies, but still to no avail. I'm running Slackware 10 kernel 2.6.7, and here are my sound kernel options: ALSA enabled as module Intel 8x0 enabled as module I have OSS sequencer APi enabled as module I run alsaconf, then alsamixer, and then alsactl store. All recognize my audio device: an Intel 8x0. However, when sound still doesn't work... except... when I get close to my speakers, there is faint static sound. Whenever I'm trying to play an MP3, the static changes pitch. So, in a sense it is playing sounds, except not correctly. I have no idea why sound wouldn't work. Here's my lsmod output: ndiswrapper 74496 0 snd_pcm_oss 51240 0 snd_mixer_oss 17920 3 snd_pcm_oss ipv6 237024 8 uhci_hcd 29328 0 nvidia_agp 6044 1 ohci_hcd 19588 0 ehci_hcd 29444 0 forcedeth 13056 0 snd_intel8x0 30600 8 snd_ac97_codec 67076 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_pcm 87688 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0 snd_timer 22148 1 snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 9224 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 6400 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_rawmidi 21156 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 6664 1 snd_rawmidi snd 47332 20 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi, snd_seq_device pciehp 93284 0 shpchp 96228 0 evdev 7552 0 dm_mod 38688 0 agpgart 27816 1 nvidia_agp Here is my /etc/modules.conf file: alias wlan0 ndiswrapper alias char-major-195 nvidia alias char-major-116 soundcore alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 Please, sound is really important to me, because I'm developing games and I need it. Thanks so much in advance, Cipher3D

It's just an idea, but I get quiet 'static-like' noise on my sb live when I enable the digital output instead of analog. Try searching for an option that enables/disables spdif or any kind of digital output and play with these in alsamixer.
Maybe that will help

Does sound work when you are root ? This might be a permission problem.

no...i'm always root (heh, dangerous...but right now I'm trying to configure all these things)...
hm...so if I switch to analog output sound should work??
