The GeForce 5200 may be cheap, but that's its strength! It has DirectX 9 capability, for $75.

Right.

For the next step up, I'd go with a Radeon 9600 Pro. It runs very well, and has great DX9 performance (much better than FX 5700).

Can you really compare a graphics cards that costs $160 and one that cost $100 ? :)

After that, I'd choose a Radeon 9800 Pro or XT, rather than the GeForce FX 5950; the 9800 has better performance in most cases I care about.

True, especially for gaming.
If you're a programmer and want top-of-the-line OpenGL features, the FX line is better though. For instance the FX line is the only one to expose branching capabilities in shaders.

At the top end, I'd choose a GeForce 6800 GT -- it's 100 bucks cheaper than the Ultra, and only takes one slot instead of two; still, it has most of the performance and all of the features. The X800 has lots of performance, but lacks a bit on features (it's about the same as the 9800).

It seems to be true actually, but I'm not sure we can really compare graphics cards with unmature graphics drivers. The graphics cards are not even sold in some countries.

If you need under $100, it's hard to beat the FX 5200, but DON'T expect it to be a kick-ass gamer cards. Those start at $150 and really come into full swing around $275.

FX5700 is not that bad for a $100 graphics card, even if you get "only" 128MB :))
the radeon 9000 is about $75.00

But it's not DX9-compatible
First of all, thanks to everyone for all your help. Based on your suggestions, I've compiled a list of 5 cards.

1) eVGA nVIDIA GeForce FX5700 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, RETAIL
$127.00 + shipping

2)XFX nVIDIA GeForce FX5700 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, RETAIL
$145.00 + shipping

3)SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, RETAIL
$103.00 + $2.95 shipping

4)SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800SE Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, OEM
$131.00 + free shipping

5)SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -BULK -OEM
$141.50 + free shipping

Which one would you choose?

All of these are at newegg.com. These cards cost more than my original target of $100 US, but it's probably better to spend a little more now so I won't have to upgrade for a while.

Again, thanks for all your help.
Do not get the SEs. I would get the 9600 XT, since it comes with a coupon for a free copy of Half-Life 2 when it comes out, if they are still giving that offer.

I've used a 9800SE before and it wasn't all that bad. when it comes to overall (mostly shader) performance it was about 15% faster than my 9500 pro, and it was noticably faster than a nvidia 5900xt (it was a good margin, 30fps vs 45fps). Running on a 5200 was an absolute joke, the performance was truly spectacuarly bad... But this was a shader heavy test...

I know that this is something of an odd result... but it's what my experience with my own code is.

So I'd say that a 9800SE would be similar (maybe slightly lower) performance to a 9600XT.. but have ever so slightly better architecture (longer shaders, blah blah).

final word:

read this article start to finish.

noooooooooooooo the geforce fx 5200 is the biggest failure nvidia can ever produce.

Any other FX model just not the 5200 is good, Let me C
190 FPS i q3 Medium Settings (800*600)
And then i turned antialiasing 2x on and it went down 2 70 fps.

I Replaced it with a 5700LE (256MB) which costed R950/6.5 = $140

Nvidia® GeForce™ FX5200 128MB DDR AGP 8X with TV-OUT $70
Nvidia® GeForce™ FX5500 256MB DDR AGP 8X with TV-OUT $110
Nvidia® GeForce™ FX5700LE 256MB DDR AGP 8X with VIVO $140

but i live in africa and those are supplier prices.

NO what ever you do dont by a fx5200, A Geforce 4 MX440 128MB Scores the same points in 3dmark as the fx (Except ofcourse the fx supports directX9)

mm

Umm not by my experiance with the PNY GeForce FX 5200, It beat my 9600SE
I am very very satisfied with my 9600XT (256 MB in my case), it's a great card for it's price i think. I'd personally go for the 9600XT or the 9800SE (which i heard is a good card too).
well im sorry for being negative about it but the game magizenes said so and the card i got is a OEM
