Can't make 4/8 bit bitmaps

I''m looking for a way to make new or convert existing bitmaps to 4 or 8 bit color depth. Photoshop 6.0 doesn''t seem to have a way of doing this (the options are there but anything below 16 is greyed out). So does anyone know of a technique or conversion tool for doing this? Paintshop Pro (from version 4) does bit depth changes, though I have no idea what it will do if asked to produce 4-bits. I left EGA many years ago and have no wish to return.

But it does offer options regarding the dithering you may need in the reduction process.

Another converter was Graphic Workshop, though I haven''t seen that around for a while.

Maybe Gimp will do it?

Photoshop will let you do it, but there''s some weird thing you have to do...try setting the color mode to RGB or something else, that ought to enable it.

Although I couldn''t get a non-paletized 8-bit image.

Setting the color mode to indexed did it. Thanks.
