Evilentity - anyone try this?
http://undeadlinux.org/evile/mission.php hmm looks very interesting, has anyone tried this distro before?
I think I''m gonna try it, and maybe write a review for it, what do you people want to see in the review?

My impression is that it''s too unprofessional to succeed.

Whilst reading about it at first amused me, and I considered trying it because I like enlightenment, after those first impressions I quickly became less and less impressed
Their zealotry doesn''t impress me - they go over the top with the windows bashing - their entry on distrowatch.com says
They are also very anti gnome and kde, saying they are inferior to enlightenment, and complaining about gnome and kde apps (which according to them only word under gnome or kde)
Whilst the above may be "haha only serious" (its difficult to tell), to those who aren''t in on the joke they will either make zealots out of them or put them off.
More importantly, making people use enlightenment (they claim gnome and kde aren''t supported, though presumably you can install them, its just more effort, which isn''t helpful for a distro trying to convery people away from the windows world). Linux is about choice and freedom, but they are trying to take it away from us and make us use the programs they want
Looking at the distrowatch.com page about them, the amount of software available isn''t great, and it''s fair from bleeding edge
Whilst it seems like a bit of fun, and it''s quite amusing, I don''t think it''s for me, or the best way for new linux users to learn about linux
Of course, I haven''t used it, but that''s my opinion based on reading about it

it''s kinda hard to take them seriously when they have "Gothicsluts.com" on the web browser in thier screenshots section.

well ... everyone is entitled to their opinions. Seems as if though no one here has actually tried the distro for themselves... instead you do the same to EvilEntity as you claim we did to Windows..
As far as choice goes... its GNU linux u can install whatever window manager you like on it. The default window manager is enlightenment because its lightweight and fast. Other distros choose kde or gnome as theirs... I figure we can do the same.
And at this time DR-0.25 is not bleeding edge ... its over a year old. We are currently very close to a pre release of DR-0.30 which is very up to date and includes a brand new package management system developed in house. The new system also has a internet fetch feature and a tk ui. Also included is a different init system ...Kernel 2.6 +udev+hotplug and much more.
Here is the thing. You mentioned about how are we going to win over windows users. Well our answer is not a ''clone'' of another operating environment. 80% of the people i talk to that are windows users who tried linux say ''man it was slower than my windows box by 2 or 3 times'' . We strive to make that not the case.

I said I haven''t tried it, and I gave my reasons why I don''t want to try it - but what I did to EE was not what you did to windows, since my main problem was that you went over the top with the windows bashing (and you also complain about its stability, which isn''t really an issue anymore)
Most distros let you install more than one window manager/desktop environment when you install them, and since this distro seems to be aimed at people wanting to try something other than windows, expecting them to be able to manually install something else is probably a bit much (and trying out lots of different WMs/DEs is probably something most people who are new to linux like to do)
Many distros manage to keep things up to date without new releases, so if future versions can do that (maybe it''s what you mean by internet fetch feature) I''d be more likely to try it
The fact that the distrowatch.com entry claims that it erases your windows partition worries me though - what does it do to other linux partitions?

EvilEntity will not bend to the will of the Win-Idiots and there quest for bloated Operating Systems
now who looks like and idiot? other than that i quite like their philosophy of cutting out crap etc, but i won't try i because my current gentoo based installation is just fine.
edit: seemingly it was me that looked like an idiot with those messed up tags...

It''s a joke dude.. It just does that by default, like Mandrake, slackware and Debian all do..
Well I tried it out, and the installation was alot like vector, cept it took somewhere around an hour to install(not sure cause I walked away from it) as it optimized a whole load of stuff for the system, and the jokes during the installer got bland after a while.. The first boot took around 30 seconds(a little less than half that of mandrake, but about 10 seconds more than vector), but then I found out that the installer''s hardware detection was like Debian''s in that it misconfigured almost all my hardware(well at least it got the keyboard right), but then again I looked at the todo list and saw this, so it should explain it.
-Implement Hardware Detection
So I got to configure my hardware manually(and got alot of support on doing it, learned more on this distro than any other distro, and I''ve only used it for a weekend), and now to bootup to the WM only takes 12-16 seconds depending on my DHCP.
The window manager is nothing less than impressive.. Everything is accessable at a single click of the mouse(each mouse button brings up a different menu), minimizing stuff is great, multiple desktops are extremely easy to use, it''s lightweight and looks great.. The initial impressions got me to install it on my mandrake box and use it over KDE...
As for the package selection it''s the only one that had Audacity, GIMP, blender, gtk+(v1 cause of release date), glade, SDL and CD burning programs in the default packages, also had realplayer, xmms and mplayer which were a treat. The only things I had to do was update gtk+ to 2.0(for firefox), install firefox, wine(I can see why they didn''t include this, but I gotta have my anim8or), amsn and Sylpheed(as I don''t like Mozilla Composer)..
As for my conclusion, in it''s current state(mostly because of the nonexistance of hardware autoconfiguring), it''ll take you a weekend to get up and running to it''s full power, but once there it''s a very viable operating system. The developers developing it are real fun people as well and I personally enjoy the way they go through with the relentless windows bashing, and how they''re not trying to make this another professional distro(who needs another professional one when you already got one professional one after another?). But for the average windows user, I''d wait until they got the hardware thing down a little better before trying this distro out.

Ok, so I installed it, and unless I missed something it automatically installed lilo in my MBR (easily fixable, but not impressive)
I can''t work out what this project is trying to acheive - I got the impression that it was at least partly aimed ay people new to linux, yet the installation program says its aimed at power users, and I doubt a new linux user could use the installation program without some help (I don''t have any sound yet
One question though - why is everything compiled with -O4 flags? Isn''t anything over -O3 just the same as -O3 at the moment?
Anyway - I like the enlightenment setup, and there''s potential there...
