Well I got quake3 running.. Cept I have to pass software rendering to it and that makes it run real slow.. Here''s the output I get

How do I fix this with a Ati Rage 128 Video card?
That''s without explicitly telling it to use software rendering? Do other programs run with Mesa''s software rendering? What''s the output of glxinfo (use "glxinfo | grep ''version\|vendor''" to strip out the irrelevent stuff for posting)?

That's without it, and they run with it, just very slow... glxgears on mandrake gets 1500+fps and only like 200+on vector right now..

It looks like your distro didn''t enable DRI. What driver is selected in XF86Config-4 (it''ll be in the "Device" section)? It should be "r128" to get access to the DRI stuff. If it already is, I guess I''m wrong on that and you might want to post your XFree86 log file (located at "/var/log/XFree86.0.log" by default).

Maybe this is causing the problem?
Symbol drmCtlUninstHandler from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!Symbol DRIGetDeviceInfo from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!Symbol drmCtlInstHandler from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!Symbol drmGetInterruptFromBusID from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!Symbol drmAgpBase from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!

and I installed KDE, cept the sound isn''t very lovely.. kinda like a loud screeching noise :/ works fine on everything else though, anyway I could find how to fix that?
I have two ideas on that, depending on if it''s the kernel or linker running into the missing symbols. Make sure that the "drm" module is loaded before X starts (as root, run "modprobe drm", then restart the X server). If that fixes it, great. Otherwise, I would think the distro mis-built the DRI modules somehow and they likely have newer, fixed packages available for either DRI or XFree86.

root:~# modprobe drmmodprobe: Can''t locate module drm

Have you tried executing QIII as root? Don''t know if that helps, at least with my configuration it worked fine. Any other user (without root privileges) would only have software rendering enabled (which is _REALLY_ slow).

Just try it out, it sure is not the best way (having root execute a game), but maybe it helps ...

Yeah, ignore that part of what I said .

After Googling a bit, I have a feeling there''s an error or warning further up that''s causing that. Could you post the whole log? Any lines starting with (WW) or (EE) are notable.
