Having trouble with war-game sprites and background
Well, here is the deal, currently I''m working on a Southamerican 1825 battle (as a thesis), the thing is, the ''type'' of terrain is nowhere to be found, I don''t know what kind of battle ground was at that time, so I''m currently in the middle of guesses, I think at the end I will use some kind of basic brown-green (dirt-grass, no trees) terrain.
Besides that the real problem are the military units, the size of sprites I will use for each unit will a 25x25 square of pixels (a little small I know), now, I don''t want to draw each unit by myself (I won''t have enough time to finish them), and I wanna know if there are any chances I could use some art of any project or person (with its permission of course).
I need cavalry (a guy on a horse), some artillery (a bunch of guys on a 18XX cannon) and different kind of infantry (guys with 18XX rifles), any advice or comment?

Well, first of all: SouthAmerica is *HUGE*.
What battles do you wish to represent? For example, the Bolivian-Spanish war took mainly place in plains and villages, but it was not always the case. Just plan what battles you want to represent, then study the battlefield in books, then represent it. That''s what I am doing for my strategy game right now.
Now with the sprites: A 25x25 sprite can be done easily by you. It is so small that no detail is needed. You can create a generic cavalryman, a generic infantryman, and a gun. Then just change some pixels with different colours, and you''ll have different corps, armies or whatever. At that size there is no need to add too much detail.

Well, thanks for the feedback tayete, actually for this project I''m developing a prototipe that will only have one battle.
Fought on a Peruvian field known as "Campo de Ayacucho" was the most important bettle of my country fight for freedom (Bolivia). I can''t seem to find any graphicsl information about the terrain nor the exact elevations of the whole field, that''s begining to worry me.
Also, yes I think at the end I will make my own sprites (there won''t be any animations for the movement), although the war uniforms are also an issue here, weird enough is the fact that I visited every museum here in the capital and I was unable to find any information on the subject, I will have to "create" the clothes and colors.

VVoltz : that would be because maybe you are not looking at the right place.
I googled "campo the ayacucho" and "carta" (I was hoping carta meant "map", but I think I was wrong), and guess what I found... a nice picture
I also found a nice picture of a horseman here
and another there
If you are looking for uniforms, I think you would be quite surprised at the amount of resources that wargamers have on the subject. I am sure if you can find a gaming store or something equivalent that deals with proper wargames, they ll have more stuff than you could ever use.
Also concerning your project, are you making a game or just looking for graphics to illustrate your thesis. Because I am pretty sure if you took, say, sprites from Cosacks and "painted" them to the colours of your country, it would make some pretty decent placeholders. As long as you dont claim you "created" the sprites...
Oh, and 25x25 is REALLY small. Maybe you should go for Military map symbols as found there
Also try to look for wargame websites, as I said earlier, you d be surprised at the amount of stuff wargamers have when it comes to details about military conflicts.

Hey thanks AHW, I wonder if I ever searched "Campo de Ayacucho", thanks a lot, really. =)
Those pics are gonna help me, even for clothes references.
I will post on forums like Wargamer.com, a thousand thanks.
