You''re right about computer jobs in the west (south-west, at least). When I moved to Arizona last year (Phoenix area) I was stunned at the sheer volume of computer-related job ads in the paper. There are tech recruiters all over the place, too. I got a nice Delphi/C++ development job with no experience or formal training whatsoever by bringing a CD with some finished apps to my interview.
