if it makes you decide much better

Unreal 2, Quake 2/3, Sof2, Return to Castle Wolfenstien.
All used OpenAL.
I THINK it was also used in the first Unreal, but you will have to check that one up.


OpenAL is also supported by Creative Labs. Hence it having full support for EAX HD 2. Also why it was used in the above games.

OpenAL I think would be better to learn, as since it has the backing of the biggest PC sound manufacturer and is free, it''s definitely going to take over. Well that''s my reasoning for learning it first anyway!

Uh... only Unreal 2 out of those games used OpenAL.

I don''t think OpenAL was even around when Quake / The original Unreal was made. UT2003 and Unreal 2 both use OpenAL though, so it can''t be that bad. I believe Doom3 uses it as well, though I''m not certain (It would fit Carmack''s style if it does).
