JPEG is lossy compression, TGA is lossless. That is usually enough for some people to reject JPEG.

Another bonus for TGA is that they support alpha chanel.

..but jpeg uses lossy compression. TGA is only larger basically because it is uncompressed. People generally favour it over something like JPEG because it is a very very easy format to load and save.

If you want non-lossy compression in an easy to use format, try PCX or take a look at the PNG (my personal preference) which provides very good compression for a non-lossy format.

Compressed tgas exist too, and despite not being as compressed as is possible nowadays, they''re one of the best size/quality formats in my opinion.

I suggest PNG as always.

My two cents on dropping TGA as a relic of the past...

TGA are good for the beginner as they give you all the benifit of a complex alpha map and getting a loader for them is easy.. PNG is much better but a lot harder to load without using librarys and such..
