Best partition for linux (ie ext 3, ext 2, others?)
Which one should I do, or what is better? ext 2 or ext 3? Please explain, and sorry if its a newb question as I have only used linux for a few weeks...
Thanks
ext2 will be faster.
ext3 is less likely to have data loss if your system crashes hard.
I use ext2.

I use ext2.
Why not use reiserfs? I switched from ext3 to reiserfs and it feels a bit faster. Version 4 of reiser will be even faster.

How do you use that? Can I do it with partition magic?
reiserfs is fastest and safe.
I suggest gentoo linux too ( cause its sweet)

I seriously doubt if there are tools to switch from ext3 to reiserfs without much effort.
The way I''ve done it:
- copy everything to one partition (or burn backups, copy over network, write everything down, ...)
- reformat all the other partitions
- copy stuff back to other partitions
- and reformat the remaining partition
You have to take spacial care of your boot/root partition to keep the system bootable. See Hard disk upgrade mini howto for more explanation.
Worked for me, I''ve just upgarded my hdd and I had a plenty of room to juggle around with my data. But It''s not that trivial if you''re almost out of space.
