To clarify: ALSA has never been part of any 2.4 kernel. It is an add-on module set that is has now been merged into the 2.5/6 kernel.

The article is over-hyping it a bit - ALSA''s been pretty stable for a while now as an add-on, but the inclusion into the kernel tree itself will make sure it becomes the standard.
