hi ppl, I acctually would like to know, which universities offer good artificial intelligence masters for usage in the interactive environments such as videogames? if possible i would like to do my masters in either america, britain or australia. your comments and suggestions will be much appreciated.. thanks

You can take a Masters degree in computer game technology from La Trobe University in Australia (Melbourne). Charles Sturt University also offers one I believe. La Trobe does offer research and coursework in AI and they have very solid industry links here in Australia, in case you want to get a job here afterward. You can take a Masters in Computer Science specialising in AI from Monash University... and several other top Australian universities offer specialist AI programs at Masters level.

Obviously though you''ll find more variety in the US and Britain and some excellent schools offering a great education and experience. What you really need to ask yourself is which country do you want to live in for the next few years and then choose the school.

Obviously, neither the US or Britain can compete with Australia for lifestyle, weather, beer quality and HOT BABES!

acctually im from malaysia, so australia has acctually been on my mind for some time now...been there with my parents so could not check out the nite life there..DAM..

anyways.. ill take your word about the excellent life there

ill consider la trobe uni, from my initial review of the subjects and its description, it seems that uni is more practical oriented..and i guess that would be excelent for a programming oriented career.

timkin, are u a student there...or maybe have some friends there??...any insider details about that uni and its master in cs program????

As to La Trobe, no, I''m not a student there. Although, I nearly took a job there as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. The only thing that stopped me was that the company that was providing part of the funding for the position reduced their committment such that we could only afford a PhD student, rather than a post-doc. (Note: PhD students perform work/research for peanuts!)

I can tell you that I did a fair bit of research into the department and it''s offerings, since I was going to be an academic in that department... and they are a good bunch of people teaching a well respected course. You''ll get a good education there and make excellent industry links here in Australia.

As for the spiders, snakes and alligators... the spiders are easily avoided, the snakes taste great and we have crocodiles, rather than alligators here in Oz. The difference? Crocs eat alligators for breakfast!

Sorry, I must jump into this argument. I''m doing a PhD in AI so I feel somewhat qualified.

First, AI babes do exist.

Second, PhDs can get paid quite a bit, depending on where you go and how qualified you are. Do you have the marks for scholarships? A top US university will pay upwards of 50k US for a good PhD. As a Canadian, you can make up to 40k Canadian if you are good. Anyhow, I would vehemently argue with anyone who says PhD gets paid peanuts.

Third, in terms of studying AI in computer games. There are only a few places that I recommend. Try googling "Games Research", and see what you get. Laird at UMich is quite a well known person. The GAMES research group at UA is the largest in the world. There are many other games research group in Japan too. One in the Netherlands with van der Struik.

To the Anonymous Poster who is doing his PHD, if i did not really have great grades all the way through highschool till uni...will this effect my chances of being admited as a PHD...

anyways wat is it like, to be a pHD researcher and all...Pray tell...

I study at University of Alberta, so I can tell you a bit about it. We''re insanely large, over 30 people (at my last count) doing research in games AI, although alot of them work in traditional games like chess, poker or Go, some of us do work on commercial games. We have worked in collaboration with BioWare, EA and Relic, so we''re not totally pie-in-the-sky academics. More info at http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~games

I''m not too familiar with Laird, although he is very well known in the games community for his work on Quake. I''m not sure what he''s doing now, I haven''t seen any _recent_ papers of his published that are related to games, and his homepage is kinda dated. Does anyone know more about his recent stuff?

As for marks... if you don''t have the marks to go into the PhD right away, you can always apply for a Masters first. The sad fact is that most schools look at marks for grad school. Graduate schools only look at university marks (no one cares what your high school mark is, everybody gets A''s anyways!), some ask for GRE scores too.
