Ok i am ready to try linux again (after 6months), my last 2-3 installs where all screwed by some strange errors, but now i will give linux a last chance (ive heard that linux roxx for video capturing...) BUT: i dont want to use lilo, i also dont want to use any other bootloaders! and last time ive tried to use the windows bootloader to boot linux i got a nice screen filled with a word i cant remember. All i want todo is to make my bootloader of windows 2000 (this little boot.ini file) to boot my linux partition. Last time ive try''d the following procedure (but i cant remember the exact commands anymore): -Install linux with disk-booting -read the bootblock of the disk -store it somewhere on a hd -add a line to the boot.ini maybe someone can explain to me what ive done wrong or give me a nice link/post-it-here how to get it working. oh and should i download the newest release or should i install suse linux7.x (thats the version i have when i find it ) and update it? thx T2k
why don''t you want to use lilo, it''s perfect

why dont you register to post??? and your question is like: why do you want to use something that you already have instead of installing something with nicer graphics...: because i dont want to!!!

You can use the Win2k boot loader to load Linux? Cool. Is it better than grub?

No, it''s not like that actually... lilo is pretty much the standard linux boot loader, and it''s been tested to work perfectly with linux and MANY other OS''s. The point he''s trying to make is, why try to get something to work that wasn''t designed to, when there is something designed to work properly for it. It''s like saying: "I have a philips head screwdriver and an easily accessible wrench, I need to remove this bolt, but I don''t feel like using the wrench, so how can I remove it with a philips head screwdriver." Now, i''m not saying you can''t get it to work, as you can, but why are you against using something that''s more common and proven to work?

doesnt help, ive done it as mentioned in some tuts, but all i get when selecting linux is a screen being filled with "01 " over and over, i can see how its printing it...

Is it maybe a problem with the hd where linux is installed? its acually a slave hd behind a cdrom drive (so its hdd), i got a bootsector and it contains the word lilo in it (hexviewed it), the hd has the following partitions:
hdd1= extended
hdd2= \
hdd3= \boot
hdd4= \swap
hdd5= logical win32 in extended

and the lilo config in \etc has the correct drives assigned to root and boot but its not working, doesnt matter if prompt is set or not i always see "01 " printed all the time.
making the bootpartition active isnt helping ?!

or should i try to update/upgrate suse linux 7.3 to a newer version (i can boot linux with the install-cd)???

@Ready4Dis: i love my "philips head screwdriver"

Hi, I''ve used this method once and it worked for me.

The problem with using NTLDR is that you have to create a copy of the linux boot sector and put it on the Windows partition. If you change the boot sector, you have to create another copy. I would strongy recommend you to take another look at Grub, but whatever floats your boat...

it isnt working, following this and other tutorials/methods...

edit: wow now i cant even boot the damn thing with the cd, wtf? i thought linux istn so easy to mess up (ive only activated the boot partition)... ive also tracked the error so far down that i can say: lilo isnt properly installed on the boot/root partition (it doesnt boot when i select hd4 to be bootpartition/bootharddisk in bios, same error as with the ntldr-bootloader..."01 " all over the screen), ok this was my 3rd or 4th messed linux install, arghhh ...

That''s not a valid analogy. Wrenches and screwdrivers are designed for different purposes. A bootloader is a bootloader is a bootloader and all were designed to initiate the loading of an operating system.

Why does anyone choose to do things? It''s not a question of motivation it''s a question of how things need to be done. And to that end I would suggest using the obvious tool.. Google. Search for win2k bootloader and you''d be surprised at the entries, or maybe not.
