Ideas for NeHe's site funding ?

As Jeff wrote in the news, this site needs new ideas to make money. I guess there should be at least a thread about this in the forum, so here it is. Does anybody have ideas ? Maybe the "NeHe community" could "create" something (a book, a game, a 3d engine, whatever) that could either be sold on the site (benefits could be shared as follows: the site gets all money and the contributors become famous, get well-paid jobs, golden parachutes, stock... ;*), or, at least, increase the number of visitors on the site. That''s a perfect example of BadIdea(TM). Who wanna give an example of GoodIdea(TM) ?

Well, I was going to ask Jeff about this, but since there is a thread I might as well offer it here.

Digital Resolution Studios is in the process of developing 5 games using a unified engine. What makes it even more fun is that they are in different genres. Anyways. We are looking for contributions to help us with these projects, however, we are not looking to bring in new people unless contributions are significant.

We are mostly looking just for help when we come accross problems we can''t fix (and of course lots of beta testers!!!). Any help provided by the NeHe community would be greatly appreciative.

All of us are developing this from out of pocket cash and have a tremendous amount on the line. What I will do (not might, will) is when the games start bringing in cash, I''ll personally send Jeff a residual check to help maintain the site as my appreciation.

The idea is not much, but it is better than nothing. However that last idea is not bad either.

This is a take it or leave it offer. Jeff has helped me on several problems I have had and he has had so much bad happen this is the least I can do right now since my situation is not much better.

I hope at the very least this may generate more ideas for funding. I would hate to see such a valubale site disapear. I''ve even offered to host it on my servers.

Hope you all have a good day and god bless.

I''m happy to see this thread back at the top without having to answer to myself.

Count me for 2.5 beta testers: two regular testers, and one 1 year old extreme-tester (the kind that hits all keys on the keyboard and throws the cordless mouse ;-)

Deal. Although I wont be posting much updates about the games here, I will send major updates to Jeff for the news section (hopefully he will post them). As we develop the game, the major and minor postings will be at http://digitalresolutionstudios.com/phpBB2/ . It is just easier for us that way. I will try to post some of them here if it is requested.

The one thing I dont like about this site is how windows based it is. If this site would become more frendly to *nix systems maybe people could start to port OpenGL games to *nix. Game companies would like that because the more platforms they support the more money they make.

Jeff could also licence his engine code so it can be used in any Open Source non-profit project but anything commerical they would have to pay him. He would probly have to work on his engine alot more though, but I havnt looked at it in awhile.

I have to agree with you about this, but NeHe''s site remains a very good OpenGL site, and the tuts are excellent.

There definitely should be more non-windows contents here, but at least, there''s SnowDruid''s NeHeGL SDL (BTW that''s what I used when I started SaM3d!).
Jeff, would you be interested in opening a "platform-independant OpenGL development" section ? I (and probably others) could provide a few tuts (mine based on SaM3d!''s code, you might want to look at the sources and see if you like them or not).

His engine code ? What engine code are you talking about? I never knew NeHe has an actual 3d engine
wtf ?
Nukem was probably talking about the NeHeGL basecode.
It''s not an engine but the NeHe community could (probably easily) put together an interesting (non Windows dependant) codebase and write kick ass demos on top of it.
In my opinion, the demos submitted for the last context are very good, and I would love them to be ported to Linux/Unix/MacOS (or rather partially rewritten on top of a portable codebase).

Well, if it makes you guys happy. The central engine we are developing is being designed from the ground up so that on launch day it will run on both windows and *nix OS''s. That was one condition I put into it the dev process becuase I like linux over windows.

Absolutely no one would want to use the Nehe base code for commercial development.
