What are you pinging? I get lost packet when pinging quite a few servers. Also, check what your timeout option is set to, you might want to make it longer.

Some servers disable the ICMP (the protocol ping and traceroute use) packet handlers because they can be used for denial of service attacks, and aren''t really critical for the server to work. Also, lots of firewalls won''t allow ICMP packets through. It''s just safer. So if you can surf, you''re good. Don''t worry about pings.

Just for fun su up and type
/sbin/route add default ppp0 (assuming ppp0 is your internet device)

Then try to ping. I know you said the internet already works, but it can''t hurt to try.
