The easiest way is to use the .ASE file format. 3DS is in binary and ASE is not. Just export a simple cube and take a look, you should be able to figure it out. If not try here. He converted all the code to .net but you should be able to still figure it out.

but loading 3DSMAX .MAX file seems to be impossible to me for beeing available to you - the reason is simple: .MAX file is a procedural format, no data-format; and i''m sure that you are not interested in replicating the 3DSMAX API and it''s ton''s of (parameterized) funtion calls, which are used while the loading process of a 3DSMAX .MAX file. (why do you think are the most tools, capable of reading/loading .MAX files, using 3DSMAX (via the API) itself to display the files ?)
