If you want to do multiplatforme here you go: GLFW (very nice) or SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL or FMOD, HawkNL, TinyXML, ...
It''s not big deal to set up this and once it is working everything goes very well.

I''ve never heard of HawkNL; it looks really cool. Anyone used it? Hows it work. That HawkVoice looks particularly interesting...

I''ve used it. It seems like just your standard sockets wrapper. Its not anything magical, IMHO, considering a socket is pretty much a socket on any platform, its just the API and junk is a little different. But it does its job.
I like the DARK layout!
I haven''t yet used HawkNL but I will use HawkNLU (higher level, similar to DirecPlay in DX) in my game when it is available.
